Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!
1) The first trailer has been released for Sundance hit Hearts Beat Loud, a music-based indie comedy about a father (Nick Offerman) and daughter (Kiersey Clemons) who start a band together the summer before she leaves for college. The film also shows the relationship Clemons’ character forms with another girl, played by Sasha Lane. Hearts Beat Loud opens in theaters June 8th! 2)A trailer has been released for the upcoming comedy Ideal Home, which stars Paul Rudd and Steve Coogan as a couple whose life changes when they unexpectedly find out that Coogan’s character has a grandson. The film revolves around the pair taking in the child and the shenanigans but also heartwarming moments that ensue. Ideal Home will hit theaters on June 21st.

3) A new Netflix romantic comedy Alex Strangelove was just announced for a pride month release. From Craig Johnson, out director of the Skeleton Twins, the film is a coming-of-age story of the titular Alex. It follows him with his girlfriend during senior year of high school, when he meets Elliot, a handsome, charming out gay kid "from the other side of town” and things get more complicated. Alex Strangelove will be released on Netflix June 8th.

4)More casting has been announced for the upcoming film The Good Liar from out director Bill Condon. It was already announced that out actor Ian McKellan and Oscar-winner Helen Mirren would play the leads in the con artist film. This week it was added that out actor Russell Tovey, who most recently played out hero The Ray on The CW’s DC superhero crossover, will be joining the cast as well. The Good Liar will start shooting this month.
5) The LGBTQ Film Festival Outfest recently partnered with Amazon Prime to make a large collection of LGBTQ-inclusive projects available to stream on Amazon Prime. Those include such films as GLAAD Media Award-winning documentary, Southwest of Salem; as well as the comedy G.B.F., and documentary A Sinner and Mecca. 6)The first full trailer has been released for the upcoming FX drama Pose. Set in the 80s ballroom scene, Pose will feature the largest transgender cast on television, as well has having trans talent in the writers’ room and behind the camera. The show comes from out creators Ryan Murphy and Steven Canals, and is also produced by trans trailblazers and writers Janet Mock and Our Lady J. Pose is set to premiere on June 3rd at 9pm on FX.
7) 60 nominees were announced for the Peabody Awards in TV, radio, and digital media this Tuesday. Among the highlights of the nominees are Netflix’s One Day At a Time, which features a Cuban-American family with a lesbian daughter; Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, taking place in dystopia that subjugates women, especially queer women, and Star Trek: Discovery, which includes the television franchise’s first gay couple. Out trans director’s documentary Yance Ford’s Strong Island was also nominated. Click here to see the full list of nominations!
8)Out writer, producer, and director Greg Berlanti is going to be awarded the 2018 International Founders Award at the 46th International Emmy Award Gala on November 19. Berlanti most recently directed Love, Simon, and he is also known for co-creating many of The CW’s shows, such as Supergirl, DC's Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning. The award will honor his entire body of television work, which starting from his days as a writer on Dawson’s Creek, has been setting an example for LGBTQ inclusion.
9)The cast has been announced for the 26th season of Dancing With the Stars, and it’s an all athlete season. One of the most well-known names is out figure skate Adam Rippon who will be partnering with Jenna Johnson, on the new season starting April 30. In other casting news, The CW just announced that out gay actor Colton Haynes will be returning as a series regular to the popular superhero show, Arrow. Haynes plays the role of Arsenal, and was originally introduced back in season two. He will return for the seventh season to fight alongside the titular hero.
10)In more television news, Marvel’s Jessica Jones was renewed for a third season on Netflix. The show, in addition to following the titular hero, also includes her lawyer Jeri Hogarth, an out lesbian, who is a core part of the cast. Comedy Central’s Broad City was also renewed for a fifth and final season. Creators Abbi Jacobson, who recently came out as bi, and Ilana Glazer have signed a deal with the network to keep creating content with them.
11)Earlier this week, out pop star Kesha released a music video for her single “I Need A Woman To Love,” in which she goes to Vegas and officiates a wedding between two women. The couple she marries, Dani and Lindsay, talk in the video about the significance of their wedding and what Kesha’s support means to them. Out pop singer Halsey also released a music video for her single “Alone,” ft. Big Sean and Stefflon Don, which you can watch here!
12) Queer filmmaker James Sweeney is currently fundraising for his film, Straight Up, which blurs the boundaries of romance, friendship, and labels of sexuality. The film is a story of gay man with OCD who begins to develop a romantic friendship with Rory, a woman he quickly connects with. Expanding on a short film that was a Vimeo Staff Pick, the film tells a love story with levity and changing expectations. Donate to the Seed and Spark here, and watch the short film below!
